Soi Dog Foundation was established in Phuket, Thailand in 2003 by British couple John and Gill Dalley MBE, with the help of Margot Homburg Park. The word 'soi' means 'street' in Thai, reflecting the foundation's core mission to care for the millions of stray dogs and cats living on Thailand's streets. What began as a local effort in Phuket has grown into Southeast Asia's largest stray animal rescue organisation, legally registered as a nonprofit in Thailand, the US, Canada, Australia, the UK, France, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.
Spread across 12 acres in Phuket, the Gill Dalley Sanctuary is home to over 1,800 dogs and cats at any one time. It houses the most advanced shelter dog and cat hospitals in Southeast Asia, handling over 400 new animal admissions each month. Animals receive surgical care, physiotherapy, laser treatment, hydrotherapy, and psychological rehabilitation from a team of experienced veterinarians and animal behaviourists.
Soi Dog's mobile rescue teams operate seven days a week across Thailand, responding to between 1,200 and 1,600 calls for help every month. Common cases include distemper, parvovirus, mange, canine transmissible tumours, road traffic injuries, and snare trap wounds. Outreach teams also provide roadside care and vaccination to reduce unnecessary hospital admissions.
Soi Dog's world-leading Catch-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (CNVR) programme has humanely sterilised close to 35,000 stray dogs and feral cats since 2003, directly reducing the number of animals born into suffering on the streets and helping to eliminate rabies across communities.
Soi Dog was instrumental in ending the dog meat trade in Thailand in 2014, rehabilitating and rehoming hundreds of rescued dogs. The foundation continues to campaign against the trade in other Southeast Asian countries, including active operations in the Philippines.
Whether you're in Thailand or overseas, Soi Dog helps match rescued dogs and cats with forever families through its adoption programme and International Partner Rescue Programme — which has rehomed over 1,500 animals internationally. Last year alone, over 450 dogs and cats were matched with their forever families.
Soi Dog is funded entirely by donations from supporters around the world. You can sponsor an animal, donate to specific programmes, or volunteer at the Phuket sanctuary. Every contribution directly funds rescue operations, medical care, and the CNVR programme.
