Scooby was started in 1987 by a group of local women alarmed at the number of abandoned dogs around Medina del Campo, in the province of Valladolid. In the mid-1990s, under its president Fermín Pérez, it began exposing the treatment of Spanish greyhounds (galgos) used for hunting, and its work became international. It is now one of the largest animal shelters in Spain.
Scooby has shelters in Medina del Campo, Zamora and Palencia, and also provides the collection service for abandoned animals in parts of the region. It says more than 600 dogs and cats live at its shelters, many of them galgos and podencos abandoned at the end of the hunting season, and that four or five abandoned animals arrive on an average day. Its sanctuary is the permanent home of around 200 farm animals, including horses, donkeys, goats, pigs, cows and poultry, many of them seized by the Guardia Civil or rescued from closed zoos; these animals are not for adoption.
Adoptions abroad, especially to the Netherlands, France, Italy, Germany and the UK, are crucial to Scooby’s work, and partner groups such as Scooby Spanish Dog Rescue UK help rehome its dogs. Scooby is funded mainly by donations, members and merchandise sales.
You can adopt, foster, sponsor a sanctuary animal through virtual adoption, become a member, volunteer or donate by bank transfer, PayPal or Bizum. Scooby is a registered animal protection association (Asociación SPA Scooby, CIF G47233358).
