Spain

Spain is home to hundreds of protectoras de animales (animal protection associations), many of them focused on the galgos (Spanish greyhounds) and podencos that are widely used for hunting and frequently abandoned at the end of the season. Spanish rescues often rehome dogs abroad — particularly to the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and the USA — and many have registered support charities in those countries. Volunteering at a Spanish shelter is a popular way to help. Each organisation listed on Real Rescues has been checked against its official website and its charity or association registration before being added.
