SOSD, formerly known as Save Our Street Dogs, was founded in July 2011 by volunteers who wanted to help Singapore's stray and abandoned dogs. It was registered as a society in 2012, became a registered charity in 2013 and gained Institution of a Public Character (IPC) status in 2015, which means donations made in Singapore are tax-deductible. In 2013 it took over an abandoned shelter to consolidate its rehabilitation work, and in 2018 it moved to The Animal Lodge on Sungei Tengah Road, the government-built hub for animal shelters in north-western Singapore.
The shelter looks after more than 50 rescue dogs, many of them local mixed-breed street dogs (often called Singapore Specials), cared for by full-time caretakers and a large team of volunteers. Alongside rescue and rehoming, SOSD runs trap-neuter-release-management (TNRM) for street dogs, including long-running projects on Pulau Ubin and Jurong Island, and has worked with government agencies on a dog sterilisation programme since 2017. Its Healing Paws programme, started in 2014, takes trained dogs to visit people in care settings, and it also runs school programmes and shelter tours.
To adopt, attend SOSD's Pre-Adoption Briefing and fill in its adopter sign-up form; a rehoming volunteer will then contact you, arrange a house visit and introduce you to dogs that suit your home. Shelter visits are by appointment only, and walk-ins may be turned away.
You can also foster, volunteer, sponsor a dog through its Sponsor-A-Dog scheme or give to its medical fund. Donations can be made through SOSD's Giving.sg page (tax-deductible in Singapore) or by PayPal from its website.
