Los Cabos Humane Society

Los Cabos Humane Society (LCHS) was founded in 1992 by Barbara Cooperman and Joanie Feinstein, with the help of local vet Dr Tapia, and has operated continuously in Cabo San Lucas ever since, on land donated by the Víctor Hugo Ceseña family. It is a non-profit civil organisation that rescues abandoned, sick and mistreated dogs and cats, treats and rehabilitates them, and finds them new homes.

Since 2018 LCHS has worked as a no-kill shelter, so some animals stay for a year or more until the right home is found. Staff care for the animals seven days a week. Between 2018 and 2025 the society carried out more than 19,000 spay and neuter operations, one of the main ways it tackles the overpopulation of street animals in Los Cabos. In summer 2025 the shelter closed temporarily to new intakes because it was overwhelmed, while staff continued caring for the animals already there.

Adopters can meet the animals at the shelter on Mondays and Tuesdays (8:00–17:30) or at the adoption point in Petco, Puerto Paraíso Mall, Thursday to Sunday. To adopt, you bring photos or a video of where the pet will live, proof of address and official ID, sign the adoption contract, pay a recovery fee of 1,000 pesos and agree to a follow-up home visit. Homes must be fully enclosed with shade throughout the day.

The society relies on donations, volunteers and fundraising events such as its yearly Paws 'n Claws fundraiser. You can donate online, volunteer at the shelter or adopt.
