The NSPCA was created in October 2025 by uniting two of Ireland's best-known animal charities: the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA), Ireland's oldest animal welfare charity, founded in Dublin in 1840, and the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA), founded in 1949. The merger was designed to give Ireland a single national animal welfare charity able to deliver a co-ordinated national strategy.
Its headquarters is the former DSPCA centre on Mount Venus Road in Rathfarnham, Dublin 16. The national network also includes NSPCA Longford, the former ISPCA National Animal Centre on an 88-acre site; centres in Waterford and Wicklow, which joined the network in 2023; and an equine rescue centre opened in 2007.
The charity rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes thousands of animals every year, from dogs and cats to horses, farm animals and wildlife. Its work spans cruelty investigations, animal ambulances, veterinary care, adoption and fostering, education and advocacy for stronger animal welfare standards in Ireland.
The NSPCA is a registered charity in Ireland (CHY 1047, RCN 20001735). Adoption, fostering and volunteering enquiries can be made through its website, and donations can be made directly online.
