India has tens of millions of free-roaming community dogs, as well as cats, cattle, donkeys and wildlife in need of care, and a large network of animal welfare organisations working to help them. Indian rescues typically run animal hospitals and ambulances, sterilisation and anti-rabies vaccination drives under the Animal Birth Control programme, and shelters for animals that cannot be returned to the street. Genuine organisations are usually registered as a trust, society or Section 8 company, and many are recognised by the Animal Welfare Board of India. Donors in India should look for an 80G certificate for tax relief, and an organisation needs FCRA registration to accept donations from abroad. Each Indian organisation on Real Rescues has been checked against its official website and registration details.
