The Montreal SPCA (SPCA de Montréal) was founded in 1869 as the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and was the first animal-welfare organisation in Canada. In its early years it focused on the treatment of work horses. Today it is the largest animal-protection organisation in Quebec, and its stated mission is to protect animals from neglect, abuse and exploitation and to speak up for their interests.
Its shelter on Jean-Talon Street West takes in animals from the areas it serves and rehomes cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, small animals and farm animals, as well as barn cats. It also runs a lost and found service, a foster programme, a community veterinary and sterilisation clinic, and a trap-neuter-release-maintain programme for community cats. Its investigations division handles reports of cruelty.
The SPCA also campaigns on animal-protection issues, for example by challenging no-pet clauses in leases in court, and it runs humane education programmes.
Adoption hours are 3pm to 8pm, Monday to Friday, and 11am to 6pm at weekends. You can adopt, foster, volunteer, give monthly or donate supplies. The Montreal SPCA is a registered Canadian charity (charitable number 11921 9954 RR0001). To report animal abuse, call 1-855-711-7575.
