The British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA) was established under provincial legislation passed in 1895, which authorised it to investigate offences involving cruelty to animals; it held its first formal meeting in New Westminster. More than a century later, its Cruelty Investigations Department remains the only animal welfare body in British Columbia with powers to enforce animal cruelty laws.
The society's mission is to protect and enhance the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in BC. It runs a network of branches, community animal centres, animal hospitals and clinics across the province that shelter, treat and rehome tens of thousands of animals, from dogs, cats and rabbits to farm animals, and it carries out wildlife rehabilitation work as well.
Members of the public can adopt or foster through its animal centres, volunteer, report animal distress through its toll-free Animal Helpline (1-855-622-7722), and take part in youth and school education programmes.
The BC SPCA is a registered Canadian charity (BN 11881 9036 RR0001), accredited under Imagine Canada's Standards Program, with its provincial office in Vancouver. Donations can be made directly through its website.
