North Shore Animal League America

North Shore Animal League America has been rescuing animals since 1944 and describes itself as the world’s largest and longest-running no-kill animal rescue and adoption organisation. It is based on a campus in Port Washington, on Long Island, New York, and says it has saved more than a million animals.

Since 1991 its out-of-state humane relocation programme has moved nearly 160,000 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens from overcrowded shelters to its campus and partner shelters. Its mobile units and rescue teams also respond to puppy mill closures, natural disasters and other emergencies. In 2025 its veterinary team carried out around 4,300 spay/neuter surgeries and gave more than 34,000 vaccines at its AAHA-accredited Pet Health Centers, which are also open to the public for affordable vet care.

The Alex and Elisabeth Lewyt Canine Adoption Center and Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center are open from 10am to 6pm, Wednesday to Sunday (closed Monday and Tuesday). Adopters must be 21 or over, and all adoptions are subject to approval. The organisation also runs the Mutt-i-grees humane education curriculum, used by schools and libraries across the US.

You can adopt, sponsor a pet, volunteer, fundraise or donate. North Shore Animal League America is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit (EIN 11-1666852), so donations are tax-deductible in the US.
