The Cape of Good Hope SPCA was founded in 1872 as the first SPCA society in South Africa, making it the country's oldest animal welfare organisation. Based in Grassy Park, Cape Town, it is affiliated to the RSPCA and is a member of the NSPCA, and serves an area of around 3,200 square kilometres across the Cape Peninsula.
Its work spans almost every kind of animal. The SPCA's Animal Hospital and mobile clinics treat tens of thousands of animals a year — over 10,000 at the hospital and more than 16,000 through the mobile clinics in a single year — and its sterilisation programme neuters more than 6,500 animals annually. A 24-hour Inspectorate Unit investigates cruelty and neglect, while dedicated teams run wildlife rehabilitation and release, a Farmyard and Equine Division, community education and a lost-and-found service.
The Adoption Centre rehomes dogs, cats, horses and other species, and is open Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 16:00 and on Saturdays from 08:00 to 12:00 (closed Sundays and public holidays). Supporters can also volunteer, fundraise or join TeamSPCA events. In 2026 the organisation was named Best Animal Welfare Organisation at the LUXlife Pet Products and Services Awards.
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA is a registered non-profit (NPO 003-244) and public benefit organisation (PBO 930004317), and accepts once-off and monthly donations online, by SnapScan or by EFT through its website.
