Japan

Animal rescue in Japan is driven largely by non-profit organisations (NPOs) that take in dogs and cats from public animal management centres, from the streets and from owners who can no longer care for them. Many rescues neuter, vaccinate and microchip every animal before adoption, screen adopters carefully, and run regular adoption fairs. Japanese rescues have also played an important role in caring for pets displaced by earthquakes and other disasters. Some hold certified (nintei) NPO status, which makes donations tax-deductible in Japan. Each organisation listed here has been checked against its official website and registration before being added.
