Tierheim München (Tierschutzverein München)

The Tierschutzverein München e.V. was founded in 1842, making it one of the oldest animal protection associations in Germany. Since 1956 it has run the Tierheim München in the Riem district in the east of the city, now operated through its charitable subsidiary, Tierheim München gGmbH.

According to the City of Munich, the shelter cares for more than 8,000 domestic and wild animals each year. It takes in dogs, cats, small animals, birds and farm animals, and the association also runs a wildlife station for injured and orphaned wild animals, a dog school, and the Gnadenhof Kirchasch, a sanctuary farm for elderly animals and those with special needs that cannot be rehomed.

Animals are rehomed through the shelter's adoption service. Visitors can come without an appointment on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons (13:00–16:00, except public holidays); at other times visits are by appointment. Volunteers can help with dog walking, cat care, home visits and children's programmes, and a flea market is held on Saturday afternoons, with proceeds going to the animals.

The association campaigns on issues such as compulsory cat neutering and wildlife protection, and offers advice to pet owners. It is registered in the Vereinsregister at Amtsgericht München (VR 3862) and accepts donations, memberships and animal sponsorships directly through its website.
